The 1950’s era middle school gym has not been updated since 1980. As a result, there existed a need to address numerous issues. Hot water in the showers had not worked for several years and none of the locker rooms or toilets were handicapped accessible. Children of all ages use the gym, elementary through junior high, but toilet fixtures were not sized appropriately for the ages. The little children had difficulty using the larger plumbing fixtures. The gym was not air-conditioned and the heaters were not energy efficient.
The renovated gym now has a fire sprinkler system, a state-of-art fire alarm, and a smoke detection system throughout the gym and the two adjacent multi-purpose play areas. After new bleachers, new paint, and new light fixtures were installed in the gym, it looks like a whole new facility. Most of the existing sewer lines under the slab had collapsed or failed and were clogged with tree roots. All of the existing sewer lines were completely replaced from new toilet fixtures to the City sewer main.
The old gym has new life and should serve the school district for another thirty years.
